해녀[Haenyeo]: Mothers of the Sea

This mural is inspired by 해녀 [Haenyeo] the female deep sea divers of Jeju, a subtropical volcanic island located on the southern tip of Korea's peninsula. Often referred to as "Mothers of the Sea," they dive up to 30 meters with no oxygen or diving equipment. Before a dive, prayers are said to the Jamsugut, goddess of the sea, to ask for safety and an abundant catch.

Known for their independent spirit,
iron will and determination, 해녀 haenyeo
are representative of the semi-matriarchal
family structure of Jeju.

Although the 해녀/Haenyeo community are physically and mentally strong, it has become a declining practice impacted by industrialization and health conditions. I want to cherish the beauty in this cultural practice, emphasizing the 해녀/Haenyeo’s tenacity, spirit and culture by painting the divers scavenging for sea floor for abalone, octopus, sea urchins and other sea creatures. This was my digital sketch designed prior to the mural jam.

I remember visiting Jeju Island for the first time and there was an outdoor 해녀/Haenyeo photo exhibit. I was really captured by how their vibrant sporting wetsuits, goggles and fishing equipment contrasted their environment. I was inspired by how the bold colours seemed to truly represent their strength.
