outdated(오래된)
When translating Korean to English, there are nuances lost in between the languages. The problem lies beyond our hardware. Our ports might be incongruent and our software slightly incompatible but we are made from the same parts. So why do I fail to communicate with them?
Outdated(오래된) is a time-based media installation that uses digital animation and language to investigate the difficulties of communication between immigrant parents and their children by comparing them to computer hardware. This piece is my attempt to use technology to decrypt my family dynamic and identity.
Digital Diaspora :
people who use online networks to re-create their cultural identities.
During the development of this project, I was building my PC. Once I started to build it, I realized the motherboard resembled a city seen from above. These elements are representative of my South Korean heritage, but what happens internally mimics to the planned obsolescence of modern technology.
Outdated(오래된) was a selected work in the group exhibition Preservation and Permanence InterAccess Gallery, curated by Amanda Low and Tommy Truong. This show considers loss in the age of rapid technological obsolescence. Given the speed at which digital media is developed and navigated, information loss has become inevitable.
